‘Everything starts with a story.’ - Joseph Campbell
As I walk into Azofra on the Camino Francés, Paul begins to tell me about his first Camino experience 10 years previously.
‘For the first three nights of the Camino, I found myself talking to an old man in the albergue who must have been over 80 years old. He’d always be the last to arrive and always exhausted. I was convinced that he’d die in his sleep each night because he was so frail.
Anyway, around seven to eight weeks later I find myself back in Santiago de Compostela. I’m eating in a restaurant. The door opens and in walks the old man. He had finished his Camino that very day. Recognising me from the very beginning of the Camino, he walks over. We hug, he gives me a kiss and I have tears in my eyes.
I learned two life lessons that day: firstly, that age is no barrier to walking the Camino and, secondly, it is persistence that counts.’
