“I want to be a pilgrim in life and not a tourist.”
Susan Peacock
Upon completing her first Camino, Susan Peacock, now American Pilgrims Chapter Coordinator in Jacksonville, FL wrote to friends and family, “A pilgrim is slow and takes the time to experience life, a pilgrim respects and listens to their body, a pilgrim is stripped down to their bare essentials and is seen only for their heart and soul, a pilgrim stops to help a fellow pilgrim so they can continue on the journey, a pilgrim sees and values the world God created, a pilgrim doesn’t worry so much about tomorrow but embraces today. My prayer is that I am forever a pilgrim.”
Many of us who have enjoyed walking a Camino path can probably relate to Susan’s felt experience of wanting to be ‘forever a pilgrim’. And perhaps we didn’t even set out with the intention of being a pilgrim!!! Might we feel this way be because, at a deeper level, we are all forever pilgrims passing through a foreign land on this journey we call life?
How might we stay present to being forever a pilgrim? Perhaps:
Through moments that invite open mindedness, generosity toward others
Being grateful for what is available and by dropping expectations?
Acknowledging the awe of the beauty and bounty of the natural world that can touch you in a way that can even bring you to your knees
Enjoying an unspoken heart to heart or soul to soul connection with another human being
Noticing that the past no longer burdens you, the future no longer concerns you and you feel rooted, whole and fully present to the moment at hand
When you feel the sacred in the routine of everyday life
As you recognize the challenges of the moment hold the seeds of growth and renewal
