‘In order to understand the world, one has to turn away from it on occasion.’
Albert Camus
At times, the Camino de Santiago can be a busy, noisy and heavily populated space; the Camino family, the albergue, the pilgrim meals, the other pilgrims and the technology that allows the outside world in.
Solitude is a precious gift that allows you to connect to your inner world. Disconnected from the busyness of life, solitude is a haven that can let you deepen self-awareness, enhance creativity, generate inner peace, cultivate renewal and gain clarity to life. One powerful way to embrace solitude is to spend an extended time in nature such as by walking the Camino de Santiago.
Did you embrace the gift of solitude on your Camino? Perhaps you:
Unexpectedly found yourself totally ‘alone’ and was surprised by your reaction
Had to explain to other pilgrims why you wanted solitude
Discovered the best cure for loneliness is solitude’ (Marianne Moore) by facing up to a deep-rooted fear of being all alone
Found a magical spot where you fully embraced solitude and spent time in restorative contemplation
Noticed yourself connecting more and more to your ‘essence’ during the times you were in solitude.
