‘Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.’
Henry David Thoreau
‘As I return to my apartment on the outskirts of Pamplona, three pilgrims stand at the traffic lights ahead of me. One pilgrim stares into her phone while the other two chat away. They walk across the street. The chatty pilgrims follow the ‘head-in-the-phone pilgrim. They all miss the ‘impossible to miss’ bright yellow painted on the lamp post. I shout out to them. They are grateful for my shout.’
But what if I hadn’t shouted? What might these pilgrims have ‘found’ on their alternative route out of the city?’ At some point, we can all find ourselves lost in life; by choice, by forces beyond our control, through absentmindedness and lethargy. Getting lost is part of life; a process to help you discover what’s important to you by being in a space which can be uncomfortable and scary. Like two sides of the same coin, this space provides new learning; about yourself, those around you and the world at large. Often, the longer the time you feel yourself lost, the deeper the understanding can be of what it is being asked to be learned.
Perhaps you:
Physically got ‘lost’ on the Camino. What did you gain as you ‘found’ your way back?
Felt lost in life, wondering ‘what’s next?’, as you walked the Camino. What did you ‘find’ as you lived with this question?
Lost an item on your Camino and it came back to you in the most mysterious of ways. How did you react to losing it and then finding it?
Got ‘lost’ by completely acting out of character. Who did you find yourself to be?
Trusted too much in ‘technology’ and it ‘disappeared’. What happened next?
Only realised you were ‘lost’ when you had a conversation with another pilgrim. What did they say to awaken you?
