‘Understand and challenge your personal narrative. Narratives become choices and actions – which become your life.’

Bryant McGill

I ask two pilgrims the same question, ‘Are you walking all the way to Santiago de Compostela?’  One replies, ‘Yes, definitely, come what may’.  The other replies, ‘I’m not sure, if I’m lucky I will.

Whether it be walking along the Camino de Santiago, or in life, the story we tell ourselves can define the way we think, choose and act and lead to the outcomes we get.   The story we tell ourselves, or personal narrative, often is influenced by past memories, desires for the future and how we choose to interpret the present.  How conscious we are of this personal narrative can strongly affect our well-being and the life that unfolds.

Did walking the Camino de Santiago change, or awaken you to, your personal narrative?  Perhaps you:

  • Found the time and space to fully hear the repeated story(ies) you told yourself about yourself

  • Were forced to confront a long-held belief, assumption, pattern only to discover it wasn’t true

  • Noticed that being in the Camino environment ‘changed’ who you felt yourself to be

  • Listened to another pilgrim’s story which inspired you into a new form of thinking

  • Found your personal narrative breaking down as you embraced more and more of the ‘unknown’ and the uncertainty that followed.
